In this miniature from the Persian work, Manṭiq al-ṭayr, or The Conference of the Birds, by Farīd al-Dīn ʿAṭṭār; from the 15th century. Iblis is in the company of the angels, who are all facing Adam, in the center and sheathed in holy fire. Iblis has turned away out of contempt for the first of mankind. This image is one of several of its ilk that portray Iblis as dark skinned. Like images depicting him as demonic, these offer a depiction of him after his curse, as his original form would have been that of a Jinn wreathed in holy fire or shrouded in light.
